An epic tale of rare emotional power, DUNE tells the story of Paul Atreides, a young man as gifted as he is brilliant, who is destined to experience an extraordinary destiny that is beyond him. If he is to preserve the future of his family and his people, he must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe - the only one capable of providing the world's most precious resource, capable of increasing humanity's power tenfold. As evil forces vie for control of the planet, only those who can overcome their fear will survive...

The film stars Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name, The Doctor's Daughters), Rebecca Ferguson (Doctor Sleep, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation), Oscar Isaac (Star Wars), Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (Harvey Milk, Avengers: Infinity War), Stellan Skarsgård (Chernobyl, Avengers: Age of Ultron), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: endgame), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences, Lady bird), Zendaya (Spider-man: homecoming, Euphoria), Chang Chen (Mr Long, Crouching Tiger), David Dastmalchian (Blade Runner 2049, The Dark Knight), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Rogue one: a Star Wars story, Sex education), Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling (45, Assassin's creed), Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Game of thrones) and Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem (No country for old men, Skyfall).

 Denis Villeneuve directed the film from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, based on the novel by Frank Herbert. Denis Villeneuve also produced the film with Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Joe Caracciolo. Tanya Lapointe, Joshua Grode, Herbert W. Gains, Jon Spaihts, Thomas Tull, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert executive produced.

 Villeneuve re-teamed with two-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Patrice Vermette (First Contact, Sicario, Victoria: The Early Years of a Queen), two-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Joe Walker (Blade Runner 2049, First Contact, 12 Years a Slave), two-time Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert (First Man, Blade Runner 2049), and Oscar-winning special effects supervisor Gerd Nefzer (Blade Runner 2049). Villeneuve worked for the first time with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Greig Fraser (Lion, Zero Dark Thirty, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), three-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Jacqueline West (The Revenant, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Quills - The Pen and the Blood), cinematographer Bob Morgan, and stuntman Tom Struthers (The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception). Hans Zimmer (Blade Runner 2049, Inception, Gladiator, The Lion King), Oscar-winning and multiply-nominated composer, provides the soundtrack.

Principal photography began on March 18, 2019, at the Origo Film Studios in Budapest, Hungary, and also took place in Wadi Rum in Jordan. The planet Caladan, one of the settings of the film, was filmed in Stadlandet in Norway. The movie was also filmed in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which formed a key backdrop of the planet Arrakis. Primary filming was completed in July 2019. Additional filming took place in Budapest in August 2020 but was not expected to alter the release date of the film. The film was shot for the IMAX format with an IMAX-certified Arri Alexa LF camera and an IMAX-certified Alexa Mini LF prototype, equipped with Panavision's large-format lenses in the Ultra Vista and H-series line-up, with select scenes seeing the aspect ratio opened up to 1.90:1 on all IMAX screens, and to 1.43:1 on select IMAX screens outfitted with IMAX's dual-laser projection system. Brian Herbert confirmed filming wrapped on July 26, 2019.

Dune is scheduled to have its world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021, and will be shown also during the Deauville American Film Festival . Il will be released theatrically in the United States in 3D on October 22, 2021 by Warner Bros. Pictures with a simultaneous release on the HBO Max streaming service for 31 days.
