Malignant is the latest film from the man behind the Conjuring saga: James Wan (Aquaman, Fast & Furious 7). With this original horrific thriller, the director goes back to his cinematographic beginnings. Malignant brings together Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Briana White, Jacqueline McKenzie, Jake Abel and Ingrid Bisu. Wan directed the film from a script by Akela Cooper and an original story by Wan, Ingrid Bisu and Akela Cooper. The film is produced by Wan and Michael Clear, while Eric McLeod, Judson Scott, Bisu, Peter Luo, Cheng Yang, Mandy Yu and Lei Han are executive producing.

James Wan has surrounded himself with his faithful collaborators, such as director of photography Don Burgess and chief editor Kirk Morri, chief set designer Desma Murphy and chief lighting designer Lisa Norcia. The music is by Joseph Bishara, who composed the soundtrack for all seven films in the Conjuring universe. The film will be released in theaters starting September 1 by Warner Bros. Pictures.

In July 2019, it was announced that James Wan would direct the film at New Line Cinema from a script by Akela Cooper and J.T. Petty, based on an original story he wrote alongside Ingrid Bisu and that he would serve as a producer alongside Michael Clear under his Atomic Monster banner In September, Wan officially revealed that the title was Malignant, with Bloody Disgusting claiming that the film would be more in line with a giallo film. In August 2019, Annabelle Wallis, George Young and Jake Abel were added to the film's cast. In September 2019, Maddie Hasson, Michole Briana White and Jacqueline McKenzie joined the cast of the film.Mckenna Grace was added to the cast in March 2020. Production began on September 24, 2019 in Los Angeles and ended on December 8, 2019.

Malignant is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on September 10, 2021 by Warner Bros. Pictures under the New Line Cinema banner It was originally scheduled for release on August 14, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was pulled from the release schedule in March 2020. As part of its plans for all of its 2021 films, Warner Bros. will also release Malignant simultaneously on the HBO Max service for a period of one month, after which the film will be pulled until the normal domestic media release schedule period.
