Festivals - FCAD 2021: A festival engages

By Mulder, 25 may 2021

"We are very proud to be the first eco-responsible festival. Our commitment comes from the experience gained since the Centre International de Deauville's ISO 20 121 certification in 2018, but above all from our awareness and willingness to adapt." announces Carine Fouquier, Director of the Centre International de Deauville, co-organizer of the Festival.

Since its inception in 1975, the Festival has highlighted the diversity of American cinema, from major Hollywood productions to independent films. It is the only European festival of its size to open its doors to the public and presents nearly 150 screenings each year on three different sites: the Centre International de Deauville, the Cinéma du Casino Barrière and the Cinéma Morny.

The 47th edition will take place from September 3 to 12 and will open its doors to a committed festival.

The ISO 20121 standard dictates good practices for event management. The social, environmental and economic impact of the festival is measured each year using the CLÉO event performance calculator developed by Unimev. Through concrete and measurable actions, the Festival works each year to increase its cultural, economic and social influence and to reduce its carbon footprint.

An environmental commitment:
Destination Deauville is an active participant in the Sustainable Innovative Destination approach, led by the City of Deauville to accelerate the challenges of sustainable tourism. The Barrière Deauville Group, a long-standing partner of the Festival, is also fully committed to this approach. For this 47th edition, here are a few examples of actions that will be carried out:
- 50% of waste is recycled, the festival scrupulously respects the 5-stream selective sorting standards (paper, cardboard, plastic, wood, glass and metal). It goes further by associating local companies and by valorizing its waste. The Red Carpet is entirely recycled and revalorized into building insulation thanks to our Norman partner Recyclo Moket
- All festival-goers travel on foot: train station - hotels - restaurants - Centre International de Deauville - Casino-Morny Cinema, the "walking distance" being the major asset of the Deauville destination.
- The festival's service providers are also committed to CSR and adhere to the responsible purchasing charter (MTCA for audiovisual services, MAG for security, Bobazar for event decoration, etc.).
- The catering on the Festival terraces is committed: Bonnaire Traiteur sources its food from local suppliers, uses recyclable or reusable tableware and limits food waste to 1%.
- The referenced printers are certified Imprim'Vert, PEFC, FSC and HQE (High Environmental Quality). Nevertheless, the Festival tends to reduce its printing by promoting a more reasonable distribution.
- Dematerialization of supports: the festival program will be online on the festival-deauville.com website
- Development of green mobility: The festival teams move from one site to another thanks to electric scooters

A social and economic commitment:
The Deauville American Film Festival's impact on events and tourism is considerable. The Festival generates more than 33 million euros in economic spin-offs and produces more than 700 jobs.

A commitment to health and safety:
In April 2021, the Centre International de Deauville obtained SAFE Congress Certification, a certificate of adequacy of health prevention measures issued by Bureau Véritas Exploitation.
