Friends continues to be one of the most popular television series. After achieving some of the highest ratings in television history when it first aired, the series continues to be a particularly attractive program for all channels and streaming services, where it continues to triumph around the world. Critically and fan-favorite during its ten-year run, FRIENDS not only won the Emmy for Best Comedy, but also earned Emmy Awards for Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow. Produced by Warner Bros. Television, FRIENDS focuses on the journeys and romantic relationships of a close-knit group of friends living in New York City: brother and sister Ross (David Schwimmer) and Monia Geller (Courteney Cox), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) and Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston). FRIENDS was written by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, who executive produced alongside Kevin Bright, under the Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions umbrella, alongside Warner Bros. Television.

Friends actors Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer return to the show's iconic set - Set 24 - at Warner Studios Burbank for a special broadcast dedicated to the beloved series. Friends : Th Reunion will feature such luminaries as David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Elliott Gould, Kit Harington, Larry Hankin, Mindy Kaling, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, Reese Witherspoon and Malala Yousafzai.

Ben Winston directed and executive produced the show along with Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane, executive producers of Friends. The show is produced by Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon, Fulwell 73 Productions and Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer are also executive producers of the show. Emma Conway, James Longman, and Stacey Thomas-Muir served as co-executive producers.

On November 12, 2019, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Warner Bros. Television was developing a Friends reunion for HBO Max that would feature the whole cast and co-creators returning. On February 21, 2020, WarnerMedia announced that an unscripted Friends reunion special had been commissioned with all original cast and co-creators returning. The episode is executive produced by the show's co-creators, Kevin S. Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, and the show's main cast, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer. Ben Winston directs and executive produces through Fulwell 73. Warner Bros. Unscripted & Alternative Television is also involved in the production of the episode. The episode was filmed in Los Angeles, California at Stage 24, also known as the "The Friends Stage" at Warner Bros. Studios, Burbank, where Friends had been filmed since its second season. The filming of the reunion began in April 2021. Filming of the special was delayed twice, first in March 2020, with the original date of March 23, 2020,and second in August 2020, both due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
