Loki is an American streaming television miniseries created for Disney+ by Michael Waldron, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films in the franchise. The series takes place after the events of the film Avengers: Endgame (2019), in which an alternate version of Loki created a new timeline. Loki is produced by Marvel Studios, with Michae Waldron as writer and Kate Herron as director.

Tom Hiddleston reprises his role as Loki in the film series. Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sasha Lane and Wunmi Mosaku are also announced to be cast. With Marvel Studios having developed a number of limited series for Disney+ centered on supporting characters from the MCU films, the series was officially confirmed in November 2018, along with Hiddleston's involvement. Michael Waldron was hired in February 2019, with Herron joining in August of the same year.

In September 2018, Marvel Studios was developing several limited series for its parent company Disney's streaming service, Disney+. These series were to focus on supporting characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films who had not appeared in their own films, such as Loki; the actors who played the characters in the films were to reprise their roles for the limited series. The series was to have six to eight episodes each and a large budget to rival that of a major studio production. The series would be produced by Marvel Studios, rather than Marvel Television, which had previously produced television series in the MCU. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is expected to take an active role in the development of each series, focusing on story continuity with the films and handling the actors who will reprise their roles in the films. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed in November that a Loki-centric series was in development and that Tom Hiddleston was expected to reprise his role in the film series.

Michael Waldron was hired as writer and executive producer of the series in February 2019. He was also to write the pilot episode. The series was to follow Loki as he appears throughout human history as an unlikely influence on historical events. A month later, Feige said that Loki was more than a thousand years old in the MCU films, so the series would explore what he did throughout his long life. He added that Marvel Studios' interest in making the series was to work more with Hiddleston and explore the character of Loki beyond him being a supporting character in the films.

Hiddleston explained in August 2019 that he knew his role in Avengers: Endgame (2019), in which he filmed Loki's death for Avengers: Infinity War (2018), but he viewed it as the emotional end of his character arc. He then learned of plans for a Loki series about six weeks before Infinity War came out, and kept the series a secret until it was officially announced later that year. He says he's excited about the possibility of changing Loki in different ways by taking an earlier version of the character and "seeing him go up against more formidable opponents than he's ever seen." That same month, Kate Herron was revealed as the director and executive producer of the miniseries, which was confirmed to run for six episodes. In November 2020, a second season was planned.

The series takes place after Avengers: Endgame, which saw Loki steal the Tesseract during the 2012 events of The Avengers (2012), which created an alternate timeline to the main MCU films. In August 2019, Herron said the series would take Loki to an entirely new part of the MCU, while Waldron said it would explore the questions we're all asking: where did Loki go after taking the Tesseract? Could Loki ever make a friend? And will the sun ever shine on him again? Executive producer Stephen Broussard said that in addition to the time travel element, the series would have a man-in-the-middle quality." Waldron also felt that the series would explore the struggle with the character's identity, adding in the first 10 years of film, he is out of control at crucial times in his life, being adopted and all, and this manifests itself in anger and spite towards his family. Waldron added that there would be an unexpected sci-fi quality to the series.. According to Feige, the series will tie into the 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is in its fourth phase.

Filming began in January 2020, with Herron directing and Autumn Durald as director of photography. Filming took place in the metro Atlanta area throughout February. On March 14, filming on the series was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production resumed at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in September. As of mid-November, there was approximately one more month of shooting remaining. A potential second season is scheduled to begin filming in January 2022, under the working title Architect. Loki will debut on Disney+ in May 2021 and will consist of six episodes. It will be part of phase four of the MCU.
