By Mulder, 09 april 2021

Disney+ has unveiled a clip from its new National Geographic documentary series "Secrets of the Whales," in which a baby sperm whale is seen suckling, a never-before-filmed life scene. The series also shows never-before-seen moments such as beluga whales giving each other names so members of the pod can know where each other are, scientists realizing while watching rushes that baby beluga whales are mimicking their mother's distinctive call, 30,000 humpback whales darting from the coast of Australia to the Antarctic and leaping to communicate, and the first-ever adoption of calves from another species, when a school of beluga whales adopts narwhals.

The four episodes of this National Geographic series are produced by environmentalist director James Cameron (Avatar) and narrated in its original version by Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Gorillas in the Mist). All of them will be available exclusively on Disney+ as of Thursday, April 22, on the occasion of Earth Day.

The soundtrack, composed, produced and mixed by French composer Raphaelle Thibaut, will be released on April 19 by Hollywood Records/Disney Music Group. It features 20 tracks and will be available on all major digital platforms.

With the vast knowledge and talent of renowned National Geographic explorer and photographer Brian Skerry, "Secrets of the Whales" introduces viewers to the extraordinary communication skills of whales and the complex social structures that govern them. With the help of new technology and the latest scientific discoveries, viewers observe how whales create lifelong friendships, pass on clan traditions to younger whales, and grieve the loss of loved ones.

Filmed over three years in 24 locations around the world, this epic tale shows us that whales are far more complex and similar to our species than we imagined. Finally, discover what few people have had the chance to observe!

Brian Armstrong and Shannon Malone-DeBenedictis of Red Rock Films, James Cameron, Maria Wilhelm and Kim Butts of Earthship and Pamela Caragol of National Geographic are executive producers of this National Geographic series produced by Red Rock Films.
