Raya and the Last Dragon from Walt Disney Animation Studios is directed by Don Hall (Oscar winner for The New Heroes) and Carlos López Estrada (Director of Blindspotting), co-directed by Paul Briggs and John Ripa and produced by Osnat Shurer (Vaiana, the end of the world legend VAIANA, nominated for an Oscar in 2016) and Peter Del Vecho (The Snow Queen 1 & 2). Raya and the Last Dragon will be released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ Premium Access on March 5 in the United States and in countries offering the service except France, which will release in theaters on March 3.
Raya and the Last Dragon is inspired by the traditions and cultures of the peoples of Southeast Asia. Throughout the filming, the directors worked closely with the Raya Southeast Asia Story Trust, a group of specialists in the region. On August 24, 2019, Disney officially announced the film at D23 Expo Walt Disney Animation Studios. The film is set in a fictional fantasy country called Kumandra, inspired by the Southeast Asian cultures of Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Laos. In order to carry out their research, the filmmakers and production team traveled to all of the countries mentioned above, except Myanmar and Malaysia.
For the French version of this fantastic adventure full of humor and emotion, the exceptional participation of Géraldine Nakache who lends her voice to the mythical and legendary dragon Sisu, Anggun to the powerful and authoritarian chieftain Virana and Frédéric Chau to Benja the wise and pacifist father of Raya. Émilie Rault lends her voice to the determined warrior Raya, Jade Phan-Gia to Raya's sworn enemy Namaari, Paul Borne to the formidable giant Tong, Aloïs Le Labourier Tiêu to Boun, an adorable young entrepreneur and 10-year-old street expert, Adeline Chétail to Bébé Noi, a mischievous baby professional con artist, Bruno Magne to Tuk Tuk, Raya's best friend and faithful steed, Évelyne Grandjean to Dang Hu, the leader of the Dragon's Claw territory, Déborah Claude to the leader of the Dragon's Tail territory, Stéphane Fourreau to the leader of the Dragon's Back, Clara Quilichini to Namaari jeune, Alice Taurand to the general Atit?ya, Fabrice Trojani to Chai, Eilias Changuel to Dang Hai, and Arnaud Léonard to Wahn.
James Newton Howard composed the music for Raya and the Last Dragon, which marks the fourth time he has composed music for an animated film for Walt Disney Animation Studios, having previously composed for Dinosaur (2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) and Treasure Planet (2002).
Synopsis :
Long ago, in the imaginary kingdom of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived in harmony. But one day, an evil force fell upon the kingdom and the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. When this force reappeared five centuries later, Raya, a lonely warrior, sets out in search of the legendary last dragon to restore harmony in the land of Kumandra, among a people now divided. She begins a long journey in which she discovers that she will need much more than a dragon to save the world, and that trust and mutual aid will be essential to the success of this perilous mission.
