AppleTV+ - The Servant Season 2 : Better and more fascinating than the first season

By Mulder, 11 january 2021

We had the chance to discover the first seven episodes of the second season of The servant. While the first season set the various elements of the plot and introduced us to a couple from Philadelphia, Dorothy and Sean Turner who had just lost their 13-week-old baby Jericho and whose absence was compensated by the presence of a doll. We also discovered in this first season a young nanny, Leanne whose presence would forever transform the life of this couple and give life to their child, many supernatural elements would place this young couple in the most surprising situations each other. The end of the first season showed the disappearance of both Leanne and Jericho and would place the Turners in a rather pessimistic world.

This very convincing first season left one of today's most gifted writers and directors, M. Night Shyamalan, present here as executive producer. The presence of the city of Philadelphia dear to this director but also of a disturbing universe that allows element by element to bring some answers but also to let multiple shadowy zones hover gave this series a very special aura. It was thus necessary to wait a year before discovering this second season which turns out to be not only better than the first one but also plays with the nerves of the spectators permanently.

While the first season was written only by the creator of this series, Tony Basgallop, this one sees appearing other writers that are Nina Braddock and Ishana Night Shyamalan (also director of two episodes) who is none other than the daughter of M. Night Shyamalan. The result is an even more intriguing start to the season, but one that can also play a certain humor and also find other interesting ways to develop the relationship between this young couple and their nanny. While many current horror series prefer to sink into the easy way and click effects highlighted by more or less convincing special effects, Servant remains faithful to his desire to immerse viewers in a setting close to the universe of the cult series The Twilight Zone. Viewers wonder if Jericho was really alive or if it was only the vision of his mother Dorothy, whose husband and brother preferred to play his game to the point of really believing the baby was alive.

While the first season took place practically in the Turner's house, this one also highlights the outside world notably by the fact that this couple is looking for Leanne with the greatest importance and will do everything to bring her back to their house including being original by creating a fake site which will not be told to preserve you from any information spoiling the pleasure taken to follow this second season. In the same way we find one of the strong characters of this first season, Boris McGiver, Leanne's uncle, and this one is still growing in importance. As in the first season, religion occupies an important place in this series to the point of wondering if Leanne doesn't have a real gift and supernatural powers. The undeniable know-how of the creator of this series Tony Basgallop is even more visible here and plays on our nerves as well as presenting a certain irony in relation to the original and strong situations that punctuate the seven episodes that we have been able to discover.

Servant is one of the most fascinating series of today and its duration of about thirty minutes per episode corresponds perfectly to this desire to offer a real bewitching and disturbing experience. Certainly on the first seven episodes many questions remain open but the irreproachable writing of these episodes and a perfect casting (we will never say again how Rupert Grint is an excellent actor and knew how to escape from his too invasive role of Ron Weasley in the universe of Harry Potter). The first season had retained our opinion this one completely conquered us at the point to wait now to be able to discover the last three episodes of this second season. We already know that a third season has been validated and we hope that the end of this second season will not leave us facing too much suspense.

Executive produced by Academy Award-nominated director M. Night Shyamalan, the ten-episode second season will premiere globally on Apple TV+ with the first episode on January 15, 2021, followed by new episodes weekly, every Friday. The cast of Servant including Lauren Ambrose, Toby Kebbell, Nell Tiger Free and Rupert Grint will all reprise their characters for the second season. Servant is created by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominated executive producer and writer Tony Basgallop. In addition to Shyamalan and Basgallop, Servant is executive produced by Ashwin Rajan, Jason Blumenthal, Todd Black and Steve Tisch. Taylor Latham and Patrick Markey serve as co-executive producers.
