Chaos Walking was originally a science fiction series for young adults written by the American-British novelist Patrick Ness. It takes place in a dystopian world where all living creatures can hear the thoughts of others in a flow of images, words and sounds called Noise. The series is named after a line from the first book: "Noise is a man without a filter, and without a filter, a man is nothing but chaos on the march." The series consists of a trilogy of novels and three short stories.

The three novels feature two teenagers, Todd Hewitt and Viola Eade, who are confronted with moral issues and high stakes as the planet around them goes to war. The Knife of Never Letting Go (2008) begins with Todd who is forced to flee his city after discovering a quiet corner of silence. In the second book, The Ask and the Answer (2009), tensions rise as a civil war between two opposing factions forms, and in the final book, Monsters of Men (2010), native species of the New World rebel against humans just as a ship full of new settlers is about to arrive on the planet. The series has won almost every major award for children's fiction in the UK, including the 2008 Guardian Award, the James Tiptree, Jr. Award and the Costa Children's Book Award. Monsters of Men won the Carnegie Medal in 2011. The series has been praised for its treatment of themes such as gender politics, redemption, the meaning of war and the unclear distinction between good and evil, all integrated into its complex and fast-paced narrative. The first novel is told entirely by Todd, the second is told through the eyes of Todd and Viola and the third book is told through the eyes of Todd, Viola and The Return.

Chaos Walking is based on the science-fiction trilogy Chaos Walking. It is more precisely the adaptation of the first novel, The Knife of Never Letting Go by Ness, published in 2008. The film stars Daisy Ridley, Tom Holland, Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas and David Oyelowo. In October 2011, Lionsgate acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the film adaptation of Patrick Ness' Chaos Walking trilogy, which will be produced by Doug Davison's production company, Quadrant Pictures. Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland are the heroes of this saga for young adults, which promises to be a new franchise in the tradition of Hunger Games, The Maze or Divergent.
