The Society of Composers & Lyricists, the premier organization for composers and songwriters working in visual media, has announced its second annual awards ceremony will be held March 2, 2021, in a presentation featuring entertainment and special guests. The SCL’s inaugural event in 2020 was launched in tandem with the organization’s 75th anniversary. The SCL looks forward to building on the great success of its inaugural year. Further details on the ceremony will be announced in January 2021.

The SCL Awards celebrate excellence and innovation in music for visual media. Awards will be presented in five competitive categories: Outstanding Original Score for a Studio Film; Outstanding Original Score for an Independent Film; Outstanding Original Score for a Television Production; Outstanding Original Song for Visual Media; Outstanding Original Score for Interactive Media. Nominees and winners are judged and determined solely by member composers and songwriters.

The winners of the inaugural awards held in January, 2020 during a glittering ceremony at the Skirball, included Hildur Gudnadóttir as a double winner for Outstanding Original Score for a Studio Film for Joker, and Outstanding Original Score for a Television Production for Chernobyl. Gudnadóttir went on to win the Academy Award for Joker. Cynthia Erivo and Joshuah Brian Campbell won Outstanding Original Song for Visual Media for “Stand Up” from Harriet, with the pair also going on to be recognized with a Best Original Song Academy Award nomination, and most recently winning Best Original Song at the World Soundtrack Awards.

Additionally, an honorary Spirit of Collaboration Award will be presented to a composer/director relationship that has created a prodigious body of outstanding work, decided by the SCL Board of Directors. The inaugural Spirit of Collaboration Award recipients were director Sam Mendes and composer Thomas Newman, who each subsequently received Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Original Score for the film 1917.

SCL President Ashley Irwin commented: “Our first awards were a tremendous success. I hope we can all be in the same room to celebrate again in person in March, but we are determined to adapt to whatever the ]circumstances are to ensure our show will go on. More than ever, in these uncertain and turbulent times, we want to celebrate our industry and peers, and recognize their amazing talent and commitment to creativity”.
