DC-Universe - DC FanDome: The Batman, the trailer has been unveiled

By Mulder, 22 august 2020

During a panel at the DC FanDome World Event, after a short preamble by Robert Pattison, director Matt Reeves spoke at length about the much-anticipated film The Batman. He confirmed that he had only shot about 25 percent of the film before production was halted due to the global pandemic. He also spoke at length about the casting, a Gotham revisited and the likely links between this film and the new Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) DC series.

As with all great Warner Bros / DC Entertainment panels, one would expect a big surprise and it was. The first trailer for The Batman was unveiled. The gothic aspect of the film that emerges from these first images reminds us of the atmosphere of the Gotham series as well as of Christopher Nolan's cult trilogy.

Bruce Wayne/Batman's mistakes pile up as a series of murders take over Gotham. As in Batman Begins, the film focuses on the early years of Bruce Wayne's career as he decides to fight Gotham's local mafia and become one of DC Comics' greatest vigilantes. The director also announced that important characters in the film will include the Penguin and a new version of Selina Kyle/Catwoman

The main photography of the film started in January 2020 in London. Greig Fraser is the cinematographer and reunites with Matt Reeves after they worked together on Let Me In (2010). Scenes of a cemetery were filmed at the Glasgow Necropolis in mid-February. In March, Warner Bros. decided to move their production to Liverpool due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike other studios with films in production, Warner Bros. did not plan to suspend shooting of The Batman, but finally did so for two weeks on March 14. On March 25, Reeves announced that shooting had been suspended indefinitely and that it was planned to resume as soon as security permitted. In April, Warner Bros. extended the release date to October 1, 2021. Matt Reeves said that about a quarter of the film was shot before the suspension, and that he had taken the time to look at what had already been shot and to think about what would come next. Reeves said that he did not plan to rewrite the script in the meantime, but that he was taking the opportunity to explore the tone of the film. On 12 May, the UK government gave the go-ahead to resume film and TV production as soon as employers put in place safety measures against coronavirus, and The Batman received permission to resume production around July. Filming will be limited to England, and crew members will be required to live close to the production area and not leave the surrounding community. Production is expected to resume in early September at Warner Bros. studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, England.
