Prime-Video - Hanna : our impression on the Pilot episode

By Mulder, 06 february 2019

Hanna is an Amazon video original show created and written by David Farr, and directed by Sarah Adina Smith. This new serie is based on the 2011 film with the same title starring starring Saoirse Ronan. Hanna is played by Esme Creed-Miles who is a young girl lethally trained by her father Erik Heller (Joel Kinnaman). Marissa Wiegler (Mireille Enos) has had the job of tracking down the father and daughter for the past 15 years.

“You want to live in that world don't you? Even if it kills you?” This quote sums up this pilot episode very well and maybe even the rest of the series to come. Young Hannah has never met anyone besides her father but she is very intelligent. Her father has armed her with lethal fighting skills as well as information about the outside world. When we meet Hannah as a teenager she is dying to see what else the world has to offer but she fears that she will never leave the forest.

I was actually a fan of the 2011 film but I admit Esme Creed-Miles is a better Hanna. She embodies this character and really makes the viewer feel for her. You can see the sadness and fear in her eyes when she asks her dad if they ever are going to leave this forest. Joel Kinnaman is a great compliment to Hanna and they're chemistry is believable like they actually are related. The writing really makes you interested to see where their characters go as the season goes on.

Hanna the prime video original series stays true to the souse material that was the film but it also expands upon it. Hanna's inner struggle with loving her father but wanting to explore the world is prevalent In both versions. I always wanted to know more about the story of Hannah after watching the movie and it seems that my wish will be granted. Amazon seems to have another hit on their hands if others like it as much as I did with the pilot and hopefully with the rest of the season.
