Serie - The Mist : Episod 104 Pequod Review

By Mulder, Los angeles, 12 july 2017

The Mist is an American science fiction-horror thriller television series developed by Christian Torpe for Spike. It is based on the horror novella of the same name by author Stephen King. An unexplained mist slowly envelops the city of Bridgton, Maine, creating an almost impenetrable barrier to visibility. The residents of the town soon learn the situation is even more precarious as hidden within the mist are numerous monsters of various sizes that attack and kill anything that moves.

Pequod Synopsis: Kevin, Mia, Bryan and Adrian leave the sanctity of the church and arrive at an abandoned gas station where they try to reason with a father amid fears of the whereabouts of his own child. At the mall, Alex comes face to face with the mist.

Episode 4 of “The Mist” brings us right back into the center of the fear with Morgan Spector who plays Kevin and his group escaping the church. Frances Conroy as Nathalie Raven remaining “insane” and inside with the rest of the believers at the church and Gus Birney as Alex and Luke Cosgrove as Jay, stuck in the confines of the Bridgton Mall.

Kevin and his group run into a father named Clay (Teagle F. Bougere) looking for his son and the knowledge that Kevin has he is withholding from Clay in order to spare him as well as manipulate him. It’s unfortunate that Kevin is going off the golden path so to speak and has been reduced to this form of manipulation but it does identify and clearly illustrate the importance of reuniting with his family and the lengths for which he is willing to go. The rest of his group seem to go along with this easily enough due to their own desires to survive but the junkie/prisoner Mia Lambert played by Danica Curcic seems to be feeding Kevin’s fears as well as influencing him. A love interest could possibly appear in the immediate future of the series as is classic for two opposing philosophies that disagree but through conflict begin to coincide with one another. It seems fairly unlikely to occur but Kevin’s relationship with his wife Eve (Alyssa Sutherland) does look like it may be straining and the incident with their daughter Alex’s rape could be a huge factor of their separation. Yet this is all speculation as Jay also seems to have planted a small seed of doubt in Alex’s mind about whether or not the rape even occurred and also, that he was the actual perpetrator. It’s more likely and more compelling if Jay were to turn out to be a scapegoat and for the true villain to be someone else, we will reserve our opinions on the matter until further clues are given.

But getting into the real nitty gritty of this episode we finally get a definitive glimpse of the threats lurking within The Mist. They are mysterious shadow’s that tower over Alex and a young girl she is reading to by the name of Lila (Lola Flanery) when they infiltrate into the mall through the actions of two reckless teens. This moment of exposure and discovery is the most profound moment of absolute terror for the series thus far. It is a perfect blend of danger and fear of the unknown and hopefully series creator Christian Torpe continues this trend. It was most thrilling scene to date for the Stephen King adaptation.

Kevin is slowly transforming from the household husband and Mr. Mom into a more aggressive anti-hero but he is still tip toeing the line of good and evil. Alex, Jay, and the rest of the mall inhabitants are transgressing into a terrorizing group with a dangerous mob mentality which personifies King’s ideas of how quickly people can lose their humanity once fear has a grip. Nathalie (Frances Conroy) is seemingly becoming some type of beacon to represent the intentions or the powers that control the mist and the struggles she faces at the church. Her beliefs in the consciousness of nature such as the moth and the spider has her convinced that there is a deeper meaning behind the mist. What that truly is, we will all have to wait another week to find out, but it’ll be an eager and anticipatory seven days.
