Comic Con Liverpool 2026: Maggie Wheeler on Friends

Comic Con Liverpool 2026 : Maggie Wheeler, the Voice Behind Friends’ Janice

Saturday 10 October, 2:00 PM PT United Kingdom, Liverpool, Liverpool Experience Campus, King's Dock, 16 Monarchs Quay, Halls 1A 2026-10-10

Maggie Wheeler’s appearance at Comic Con Liverpool 2026 brought one of television’s most recognisable comic performances into the spotlight. Held on 10–11 October at Liverpool Experience Campus, the Monopoly Events convention welcomed the actress whose portrayal of Janice Litman-Goralnik became a recurring pleasure throughout Friends. Her panel offered a timely reason to revisit how a supporting role, built around a distinctive voice and impeccable timing, became inseparable from the sitcom’s identity.

Comic Movie DB’s published account of the weekend reports that the discussion became emotional when Maggie Wheeler was asked about Matthew Perry. The same report mentions a conversation about where her character might be in 2026. The report does not supply a full transcript or establish that a new Friends project is in development.

Remembering Matthew Perry and an extraordinary comic partnership

The connection between Maggie Wheeler and Matthew Perry remains central to the character’s appeal. As Chandler Bing’s recurring romantic partner, Janice Litman-Goralnik could turn an ordinary encounter into an elaborate exercise in panic, embarrassment or unexpected affection. Their scenes depended on opposing rhythms: his nervous evasions and dry responses met her exuberant confidence.

The reported Liverpool moment also carries a personal history beyond the fiction. Following Matthew Perry’s death in October 2023, Maggie Wheeler publicly expressed gratitude for the creative moments they had shared and acknowledged the happiness his work had brought to audiences. Her tribute underlined why revisiting Friends can now hold two feelings at once: enjoyment of a comic performance and sadness at the loss of the person who helped create it.

How Maggie Wheeler created the famous Friends laugh

One of the best-known stories behind the performance predates Liverpool. Discussing Friends on ITV’s This Morning in 2016, Maggie Wheeler explained that the laugh emerged during the first rehearsal as a way of coping with how funny Matthew Perry was. Rather than simply breaking character when he made her laugh, she gave that impulse a sound that belonged to her character. It was a practical acting solution that became a signature.
The distinction matters because the nasal delivery is a performance, not the actress’s everyday speaking voice. The familiar “Oh. My. God.” and the laugh work together as a miniature entrance routine: recognition arrives before the scene has fully unfolded. A few syllables can revive years of remembered encounters.

In an April 2025 interview on Still Here Hollywood with Steve Kmetko, covered by People, Maggie Wheeler recalled that production concealed her presence to preserve the studio audience’s surprise. She also connected the voice to people she encountered growing up in New York, including a perfume-sample attendant at Bloomingdale’s. These earlier recollections reveal how carefully observation and staging supported the apparently spontaneous entrances. They are background to the Liverpool appearance, not quotations from that panel.

Why Janice Litman-Goralnik mattered across all ten seasons

The character first appears in “The One with the East German Laundry Detergent”, with a breakup already under way. Across the series, the relationship with Chandler Bing shifts between unwanted reunions, genuine affection and increasingly desperate escape plans. The famous Yemen storyline pushes his avoidance to an absurd extreme, while the earlier reconciliation with her husband gives the relationship a more serious dimension: the comedy briefly makes room for the consequences of breaking up a family.

Her encounter with Ross Geller reverses the usual dynamic. In “The One with Chandler’s Work Laugh”, she finds his relentless complaints too much to bear. That reversal gives Janice Litman-Goralnik a comic independence beyond being an inconvenience to Chandler Bing, and exposes another central character’s behaviour from an unexpected angle.

Her presence extends across all ten seasons, including a voice-only appearance in the sixth, when a romantic compilation tape betrays its origins. Later encounters bring her into the maternity ward, a fertility clinic and the search for a suburban home. Those settings track the main characters’ movement towards parenthood and domestic stability, allowing the recurring joke to evolve with their lives.

Beyond Friends, a career built around the voice

Maggie Wheeler’s official biography places voice work at the beginning of her professional career, including radio advertisements and animation. She voiced the female characters in SilverHawks and performed multiple roles in The Comic Strip. That background provides useful context for Friends: vocal characterisation was already part of her craft before Janice Litman-Goralnik became her most familiar creation. Her television credits also include Seinfeld, Ellen, The X-Files and Everybody Loves Raymond.

Film audiences may recognise her as the younger camp counsellor in Disney’s The Parent Trap. Her official biography also highlights another long-running commitment: directing the Golden Bridge Community Choir in Hollywood for 17 years, followed by online singing activities. She teaches a cappella workshops through an oral tradition that welcomes beginners. In 2023, she self-published the children’s book Ebeneezer Finds A Reason, with an accompanying audio recording and original song.

Together, these credits give the Liverpool appearance a broader context. The actress associated with an intentionally overwhelming sitcom voice has also used vocal performance to tell children’s stories and bring singers together. Friends remains the immediate point of recognition, but the career behind it spans several ways of connecting with an audience.
