On a star-studded evening, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) bestowed the 16th Annual Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film upon the incredibly talented and versatile actor, Ryan Gosling. The enchanting event unfolded on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at the Bacara Santa Barbara, The Ritz-Carlton, offering attendees a joyous pre-reception followed by an upscale dinner.

The celebration kicked off with SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling setting the tone, describing Gosling as one of the best actors working in cinema today. Durling shared his excitement about Gosling's latest role in the cultural phenomenon Barbie, directed by the visionary Greta Gerwig, emphasizing that it was the first time in SBIFF's history that the event had sold out and raised the most money ever. He playfully acknowledged the Ken-ergy and humorously expressed admiration for Gosling's on-screen persona, saying, On screen, to me, Ryan always comes across as soulful and seemingly preoccupied with some profound mystery.

Steve Carell, co-star in Crazy, Stupid, Love and The Big Short, brought his trademark humor to the stage, jokingly questioning why he hated Gosling before proceeding to share heartwarming anecdotes about the actor's kindness and humility. Steve Carell emphasized Gosling's dedication to humanitarian causes and his reluctance to publicize his good deeds, revealing a side of the actor that extends beyond the silver screen. He is smart and intuitive and funny, he is a joy to be around, and most of all, and this is a big one for me, he is kind. Santa Barbara, you got this one right, Steve Carell declared.

Greta Gerwig, the acclaimed director of Barbie, was introduced with a standing ovation. She painted a vivid picture of Ryan Gosling's unique acting prowess, comparing him to legends like Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, John Travolta, and Gene Wilder. Gerwig expressed her delight in working with Gosling, emphasizing his ability to dissolve into characters without creating a distance between himself and the audience. She recounted the journey of bringing Gosling on board for Barbie, revealing that his commitment went beyond her wildest dreams, and she couldn't have imagined a more perfect person to embody Ken.

Upon receiving the award, Gosling, visibly moved, humbly admitted he was not emotionally prepared for the night. With a touch of humor, he quipped, If I knew that Steve and Greta were going to be this great - charming, smart, gracious, funny - I would have suggested that I open and they close - so we can end on a high note. Reflecting on his career, Gosling shared, By playing other people, I was learning who I was in the process. He acknowledged the profound impact cinema has had on his life, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to make movies and meet the love of his life, Eva Mendes, with whom he shares two children.

The Kirk Douglas Award, presented posthumously, recognizes lifelong contributions to cinema. Past recipients include Michelle Yeoh, Martin Scorsese, Hugh Jackman, Jane Fonda, and others. The award ceremony marked the second time since Kirk Douglas's passing that the honor was awarded, paying homage to a cinematic legend.

Roger Durling commended Gosling's performance in Barbie, hailing it as a standout cinematic achievement. Ryan Gosling has long been both a dramatic and comedic force in front of the camera. This year, thanks to his universally hailed, triumphant performance as Ken in BARBIE – a film that truly demanded the attention of critics and moviegoers around the world – he has become a true cinematic powerhouse, Durling stated.

Gosling's remarkable filmography includes critically acclaimed works such as La La Land, Drive, Crazy, Stupid, Love., and Blade Runner 2049. The evening was not only a celebration of Ryan Gosling's outstanding career but also a reminder of the lasting impact cinema has on individuals and communities.
