Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC is a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios, operating as an American film and television production company. It is renowned for its creation and production of the iconic Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, as well as its pioneering work in special effects, sound, and computer animation for films. Filmmaker George Lucas founded Lucasfilm in 1971 in San Rafael, California, and later relocated most of its operations to San Francisco in 2005. On October 30, 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in a combination of cash and stock, with $1.855 billion in stock.

Star Wars, a multimedia franchise, was originally conceived by George Lucas. It began with the release of the first film in 1977, bearing the same name, and rapidly gained worldwide popularity. The franchise has since expanded across various films and media, including television series, video games, novels, comic books, theme park attractions, and dedicated areas, creating a vast fictional universe. As of 2020, the franchise's total value was estimated at $70 billion, making it the fifth-highest-grossing media franchise of all time.

The original Star Wars film, retrospectively titled Episode IV: A New Hope (1977), was followed by two sequels, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983), forming the original Star Wars trilogy. Lucas later directed a prequel trilogy comprising Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999), Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002), and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005). In 2012, Lucas sold his production company to Disney, thereby relinquishing his ownership of the franchise. This paved the way for a sequel trilogy, consisting of Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015), Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017), and Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

All nine films of the Skywalker Saga received Academy Award nominations, with the first two releases winning awards. Alongside the main saga, the theatrical live-action "anthology" films Rogue One (2016) and Solo (2018) contributed to the franchise's immense success, amassing a combined box office revenue of over $10 billion. This achievement positions Star Wars as the second-highest-grossing film franchise of all time. Furthermore, Lucasfilm has announced upcoming films, including an untitled project by Taika Waititi scheduled for 2023 and Rogue Squadron directed by Patty Jenkins, although no specific release date has been confirmed at present.
