The movie stars Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu. The film was first announced in 2018 after the partnership between Point Grey Pictures and Lionsgate was revealed. Adele Lim was confirmed as the director in 2021, and the cast was gradually announced between August and October of the same year. Filming took place in British Columbia during the latter part of 2021.

The collaboration between Lionsgate and Point Grey Pictures was announced on August 9, 2018, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg partnering with Lionsgate for a first-look deal in developing film and television projects. On July 9, 2021, it was announced that screenwriter Adele Lim would make her feature directorial debut with an R-rated comedy film as part of this deal. Ashley Park joined the cast, and the script was written by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong and Teresa Hsiao, based on their story. Lim, Chevapravatdumrong, Hsiao, Rogen, Goldberg, Weaver, and Fagen serve as producers. Lim expressed her excitement about the project, highlighting the desire to tell a story with characters that resemble the creators, portraying flawed but heartfelt women. She praised Point Grey and Lionsgate for their support and partnership.

In August 2021, Sherry Cola and Stephanie Hsu joined the cast, and Sabrina Wu was announced as the final lead in September. Filming commenced in October, with Desmond Chiam, Alexander Hodge, and Chris Pang also joining the talented cast. In February 2023, the film's title was unveiled as Joy Ride.

Joy Ride premiered at SXSW on March 17, 2023, and is scheduled for release in the United States on July 7, 2023, distributed by Lionsgate Films. It will also be released in France on July 5, 2023, by Metropolitan FilmExport.
