Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, an action-packed spy film written, produced, and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, is set to be released as the seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible film series. The movie serves as a sequel to Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) and features a star-studded cast including Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, Henry Czerny, and Cary Elwes.
Initially known as "Libra" during pre-production, filming was scheduled to commence on February 20, 2020, in Venice. The plan was for a three-week shoot before moving to London for 40 days starting in mid-March. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy, production in the country came to a halt. Stunt rehearsals began in Surrey, England, three weeks later but were soon followed by another hiatus. On July 6, 2020, the crew in the UK received permission to resume filming without undergoing the mandatory 14-day quarantine. The production took place at Warner Bros Studios in Hertfordshire. In the following month, a similar permission was granted for filming in Møre og Romsdal, Norway. Unfortunately, a major fire broke out on a motorcycle stunt rig in Oxfordshire, which had taken six weeks to prepare and was one of the most expensive scenes ever filmed in the UK. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
Filming officially commenced on September 6, 2020, with Christopher McQuarrie sharing behind-the-scenes pictures on Instagram. In October 2020, filming took place across Norway, including Preikestolen, Stranda, and Rauma, with Tom Cruise spotted filming an action scene with Esai Morales on top of a train. Production in Italy was temporarily suspended on October 26, 2020, after 12 people tested positive for COVID-19 on set, but it resumed a week later.
In December 2020, during filming in London, an audio recording of Tom Cruise passionately reprimanding two crew members for violating COVID-19 protocols on set was leaked online. The incident drew comparisons to Cruise's character Les Grossman from the film Tropic Thunder. The response from the public and many celebrities was supportive, acknowledging the challenging circumstances and the need for strict adherence to safety measures to prevent further production disruptions. On December 28, 2020, it was reported that the principal photography would conclude at Longcross Film Studios in the United Kingdom, shifting from Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden. Filming at Longcross continued with stringent COVID-19 protocols. In February 2021, shooting wrapped up in the Middle East, and the crew returned to London for final touches.
On April 20, 2021, filming took place in the village of Levisham, North Yorkshire, specifically at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, for a thrilling sequence set in the Swiss Alps involving a train traveling at a speed of 60 miles (97 km) per hour through a detonating bridge, paying homage to the climactic train wreck scene in the 1926 silent film, The General. In August 2021, filming commenced at Birmingham's Grand Central shopping center, where Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell were spotted by onlookers. In September 2021, the film's gaffer, Martin Smith, confirmed on Instagram that principal photography had officially concluded.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is set to be released in the United States on July 14, 2023, by Paramount Pictures. Unlike the previous three films, Bad Robot Productions did not participate in the production of this movie. The sequel, Dead Reckoning Part Two, is scheduled for release on June 28, 2024.
