The year’s Oscar-nominated “doers” talk about their current projects, hopes for the future of filmmaking, and insights into the creative side of producing. (Moderated by Glenn Whipp)
the festival continued with the Producers panel conversation with Laura Berwick (Belfast), Patrick Wachsberger (Coda), Kevin Messick (Don't look up), Teruhisa Yamamoto (Drive my car), Mary Parent (Dune), Tim White (King Richard), Sara Murphy (Licorice pizza), J. Miles Dale (Nightmare alley), Tanya Seghatchian (The power of the dog) and Rita Moreno (West side story). The conversation was led by Indiewire Editor-at-Large Anne Thompson.
Mary Parent gives the scoop on Dune Part Two! “We decided to just be bold and call this film a part one… we really felt like the support was there to bring us a part two. We start filming that later this summer.”
Tim White on his personal experience with tennis: “I played Jr. tennis in the 90s and remember seeing Richard in the crowd once holding a sign that said “I told you so” and that stuck with me… it was a character that I knew and loved…The first time we met with Will, he said ‘I’ve never met Richard, but I know this guy because I know my dad and I know how I am with my own kids.’”
Kevin Messick on the ending of Don’t look up: “Nobody wanted an ending where we killed everybody and the world ended. But that was the point of the movie so it wasn’t ever going to change…Netflix was worried about the ending until we actually tested the film…That dinner scene at the end of the film remains the highest rated scene of the film.”
