Premiere - My Son : We were present at the Paris Premiere

By Mulder, Paris, Gaumont Champs Elysées, 14 october 2021

My Son is a 2021 mystery thriller film written and directed by Christian Carion. It is an English-language remake of his 2017 French film Mon garçon, which starred actors Guillaume Canet and Mélanie Laurent. It was announced in October 2020 that James McAvoy and Claire Foy had been cast to star in the film, which was written and directed by Christian Carion, remaking his 2017 French film of the same name. McAvoy was not supplied with a script or dialogue, being made to improvise for himself. Filming had begun by late October 2020, and filmed throughout Scotland. Filming in Lochaber paused after a positive COVID-19 test. The film was released on Peacock on September 15, 2021 in United States and will be released in France on November 3 2021.  .It will also be released on the The Roku Channel on December 15, 2021.

My son is an intense thriller centered on the character of Edmond Murray (James McAvoy), a man whose son goes missing in Scotland. Most of the film was shot near the Glencoe Valley in the Highlands in just eight days. Christian Carion is directing here the English-language remake of his own film, MY BOY, released in 2017, in which he directed Guillaume Canet and Mélanie Laurent. Although for MY SON, the actors, locations and script were changed, this new film was made using the same particular method as the original - what the filmmaker calls "orchestrated improvisation." The key ingredient of this revolutionary approach is to hide the story and the script from the lead actor. For example, James McAvoy arrived on set knowing only that he was playing a man whose young son had disappeared. Then, throughout the shoot, the actor remained entirely improvisational: his interpretation of Edmond is made of his real-time reactions to the other actors and situations.

The rest of the cast - Claire Foy as Edmond's ex-wife Joan, Gary Lewis as the local cop on the case, and Tom Cullen as Joan's new partner Frank - were instructed to guide McAvoy through the narrative previously devised by Christian Carion, to direct and influence him. The chronological construction resembles a game of cards where each new scene is born in reaction to the story told in the previous sequence, and is an additional piece that adds to the narrative. Orchestrated improvisation is intended to allow the actors to express spontaneous emotions, and even to imagine their own dialogue in the moment if they wish. The result of this unique filmic method is both an extraordinarily authentic portrayal by the actor and a special story, personalized by a succession of particular moments experienced in a unique way by an actor who is, more than ever, a person.

The director Christian Carion, James McAvoy and Claire Foy were present at the Paris Premiere today organized at the Gaumont Champs Elysées.
