“The film’s opening is what draws you into the story and tells the audience that they are in for a ride. That’s what I always remember about the films I saw growing up. I wanted to deliver that same level of excitement with Geostorm.” – Lorne Balfe

Award winning composer Lorne Balfe scores Warner Brother’s Geostorm, a blockbuster action thriller starring Gerard Butler. Balfe used his action background from Michael Bay’s 13 Hours, Alan Taylor’s Terminator Genisys, and Christopher Nolan’s Inception to craft an incredibly dynamic and captivating score. Balfe puts an emphasis on hooking the audience at the beginning of the film

Grammy winning composer Lorne Balfe (The LEGO Batman Movie, Genius) scores Warner Brothers’ 100-million-dollar natural disaster blockbuster Geostorm. The soundtrack will be released digitally on October 13, 2017 through Watertower Music. Balfe’s energetic score highlights the harrowing and often perilous moments of Gerard Butler’s high-octane battle with a vengeful Mother Nature.

Geostorm marks the directorial debut of Dean Devlin, who teamed with Roland Emmerich to produce Independence Day and The Patriot. In addition to directing, Devlin wrote the script which centers on a tech-savvy engineer (Butler) who designs a satellite system that can control the weather. The government sends Butler to space after one of the satellites malfunctions and freezes Afghanistan. Butler quickly surmises that the malfunction was part of a sinister plan, so he returns to Earth and kidnaps the U.S. President (Andy Garcia) in order to shut down the satellites and save the Earth.

Balfe puts immense focus on the opening scene of the film. “I always love composing the opening scenes of my films. The film’s opening is what draws you into the story and tells the audience that they are in for a ride. That’s what I always remember about the films I saw growing up. I wanted to deliver that same level of excitement with Geostorm.”

Balfe talks about the importance of good communication with the film’s director when scoring heavy effects-driven films. “Working on CGI action films is very similar to working on animated films because it’s always a work in progress. Many scenes aren’t finished until the very end of the production. That’s why is so important to have a good dialogue with your director, so they can talk you through scenes that are unfinished and aid you in visualizing the final result.”

Balfe’s filmography boasts an incredible breadth and depth of titles, ranging from major studio blockbusters to independent films, tentpole video game franchises, beloved animated feature films, critically acclaimed television series, and documentary features. Lorne’s recent film credits include; THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE (Warner Bros.); GHOST IN THE SHELL (Paramount Pictures); TERMINATOR GENISYS (Paramount Pictures); 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI (Paramount Pictures). Lorne’s video game credits include ASSASSIN’S CREED: REVELATIONS (BAFTA nomination for Best Original Music), CRYSIS 2, four titles in the SKYLANDERS series (SPYRO’S ADVENTURE, GIANTS, SWAP FORCE, and TRAP TEAM), ASSASSIN’S CREED III, ASSASIN’S CREED III: THE TYRANNY OF KING WASHINGTON, CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2, and BEYOND: TWO SOULS.
