Serie - Gotham : Episod One bad day : Gotham’s take on the The Killing joke

Par Lola, 10 mai 2018

During the last four years we’ve witnessed the grow of a young Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and watched him become Captain of the GCPD; an umbrella boy, Oswald Cobblepot “The Penguin” (Robin Lord Taylor) on his way to reign the Gotham underground; the most brilliant mind in the city being corrupted by his alter ego, Edward Nygma “The Riddler” (Cory Michael Smith); a little kitty become an strong woman, Selina Kyle “Cat” (Camren Bicondova); and a little orphan beginning his path to become “The Dark Knight”, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz).

Through the years, Gotham has involved more characters, mostly villains. One particular character has been teased for a long time, the clown Prince of crime “The Joker”. He was Jack Napier on Tim Burton's Batman movie, on Christopher Nolan’s Dark knight trilogy was unknown, and in most comics, his origin is uncertain or vague except from Alan Moore's “The killing joke” and on the latest episode called “One bad day” we have a version of this iconic comic story.

The killing joke story isn't only about how one bad day can change lives, but also how the Joker tries to repeat what happened to himself to James Gordon by shooting his daughter Barbara and sending Jim to a road of insanity surrounded in images of her being tortured in unimaginable ways.

In Gotham’s TV adaptation we can see Jeremiah Valeska (Cameron Monaghan), who represents a new introduced version of the joker in the show, going this way. Another version of the joker was formerly shown; the character named Jerome Valeska (Jeremiah’s twin brother) was first brought to the screen since the first season of Gotham. Though we knew from the writers that Jerome wasn't going to be Mr. J, the way Cameron played that insane young man and the way the writers entwined Bruce and Jerome's stories resulted in a great response of the audience, but the news of Jerome whose character was develop ingeniously through 4 seasons, being replaced with someone else to be the clown Prince of crime… That wasn't taken well until we saw it happening in kind of a predictable way, but the outcome was awesome. The new future J's character is like we've known him from day one and even then still surprise us. He isn't insane like his brother was, he's just thinking on a bigger scale in his very own way.

This episode is full of unexpected twists and we get to see new-old alliances taking place to save Gotham from this villain's plans. “One bad day” is the penultimate episode of the fourth season and the series finale name is “No man’s land” like the comic story arch that follows the aftermath of the destruction of Gotham City so it’s going to be a game-changing point for the series and we’d love to see where how this works with the building of the Batman story and how it affects every character living there. There is no news yet on the renewal of Gotham, but we’re hopefully waiting for the announcement at the FOX Upfront 2018 event next Monday May 14th.

Gotham is a prequel show produced by Warner Bros TV, based on the Batman characters of DC Comics and airs Thursdays on FOX.
