Hilariously awkward to the point where you don’t know if the problem is that Remi’sbread won’t rise, or if he wants to stick his head in the oven. Unleavened Bread, one of the film shorts being featured at the San Diego Film Festival, starts with a perceived misfire between Remi (Pablo Pauly) and Vanessa (Brigitte Lo Cicero). Both lovers part after a heated argument over responsibility. Unfortunately for Remi he goes home to Chantal (Edith Le Merdy), his over invested hover mother who feels slighted at his recent absence. Believing they have to discuss his recent “sneaky” actions, she hires a therapist to act as a go between, who ends up being a very surprised Vanessa.
After a conversation regarding trust, stemming from Chantal’s discovery of Remi’s viagra, one believes Remi could not possibly endure any more humiliation and survive, one would be wrong; in enters two more family members to add to the madness. Cleverly written dialogue hilariously presented by the actors, Unleavened Bread will make you cover your eyes as Remi cowls under the sheer force of the women around him. With each complaint from his mother acting as dagger to his manhood, you’ll laugh and cringe, but still watch, between fingers at least.
