  • 20.11.2017

The Golden State Pops Orchestra is performing a concert along with a poster exhibition to celebrate Struzan’s 70th birthday and his five decades as the movie industry’s leading poster artist at Royce Hall, December 1st.

Drew Struzan is THE living poster artist. He has created the iconic posters for: ET, STAR WARS, BLADE RUNNER, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, BEAUTY & THE BEAST, BACK TO THE FUTURE, SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, HELLBOY and hundreds more. These are all hand drawn posters! No computer layout or photoshop. Many of the film composers who worked with Drew will be conducting their scores while images of Drew’s work are projected, as well as on display in the lobby of the Royce Theater. Composers conducting include Alan SIlvestri (Back to the Future), Marco Beltrami (Hellboy), John Debney (Hocus Pocus), and the music of John Williams (ET, Star Wars, Raider of the Lost Ark, Harry Potter) to name a few.

Over the last 50 years, Drew Struzan has created some of the most iconic movie posters to ever grace the cinemas. In celebration of Struzan’s 70th birthday, Varèse Live presents the legendary artist’s work in a rare showcase that brings together the award-winning film directors and composers who have worked on the films which feature his iconic posters. George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, and countless industry titans have relied on Struzan and his artistic prowess; from Luke Skywalker to Harry Potter, no one captures the onscreen magic like Drew Struzan. Newly crafted "Visual Suites," displaying Drew's various sketches, alternate drawings and paintings, will be shown on the screen as the orchestra performs the classic film music.

Special presentations include The Shawshank Redemption, introduced by the film’s Academy Award nominated writer/director Frank Darabont, followed by the film’s composer, Thomas Newman, conducting the Golden State Pops Orchestra. Drew Struzan will receive THE HOLLYWOOD IMPACT AWARD in celebration of his immeasurable contributions to the film industry.

The Golden State Pops Orchestra was founded in 2002 by conductor and composer Steven Allen Fox, a graduate of the USC Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television (SMPTV) program, fellow graduate, composer Joshua Godoy and L.A. based arranger and orchestrator Victor Pesavento.
